Activities in the area
The Ramshorn Estate is at the heart of superb Staffordshire countryside and on the edge of the Peak District. There’s no excuse not to get out and about and do something…
Walking: the network of paths and trails across the Moorlands (www.staffsmoorlands.gov.uk) and into the Peak Park (www.peakdistrict.org) offer numerous opportunities to walks to suit all tastes and capabilities.
Cycling:
Manifold Valley cycle trail (www.staffsmoorlands.gov.uk)
Safe traffic-free cycling along the nine-mile Manifold Valley trail. Starts at Waterhouses, three miles from Ramshorn.
Other traffic-free trails:
Along the course of the old Churnet Valley line from Oakamoor to Denstone (start at Oakamoor car park, two miles from Ramshorn).
Tissington Trail: 13-mile route from Ashbourne to Parsley Hay in the Peak Park. Cycle hire at each end.
High Peak Trail: (www.peakdistrict.org/cycle) Enjoy more of the Peak District scenery from the 17.5 mile trail from Cromford, near Matlock, to Dowlow, south of Buxton.
Climbing:(www.roaches.org.uk) The Roaches, near Leek, is one of the region’s foremost rock climbing locations and draws enthusiasts nationwide.
Indoor climbing: (www.leek.ac.uk/upper-limits) Try the climbing wall at Upper Limits, Longnor.
Golf: (www.whistonhall.co.uk) The nearest course open to non-members is Whiston Hall, ten minutes’ drive from Ramshorn.
